介係詞on 要求後跟名詞、代名詞、動名詞等, 那麼, 在上面有關agree on的句子裡, 它後跟的是什麼詞呢?
答：有些文法學家把動詞+ 介係詞的結構(如look at, look after, agree on, agree to) 看作是一個整體, 就像是及物動詞一樣。這種解釋使我們能很容易理解這類介係詞動詞(prepositional verbs) 的被動形式(動詞+ 介係詞仍是一個整體) :
- She looked after her son. → Her son was looked after by her. 她照看她的兒子。→她的兒子由她照看。
- They agreed on the building of a new car factory last month.→ The building of a new card factory was agreed on last month. 他們上月已就建造一家新汽車廠的事宜達成了協定。→ 建造一家新汽車廠之事已於上月達成協議。
- We agreed on the question.→ The question was agreed on. 我們對這個問題取得了一致意見。→這個問題已取得了一致意見。
從上例可以看出, 主動句中介係詞動詞(look after, agree on) 的受詞或者(如另一派文法學家所說的) 介係詞的受詞(her son, the building, the question) 在被動句中已變成了主詞, 因此介係詞(after, on) 就再無權支配其他詞了。

上句中的agree on 可以譯為“同意”嗎?
答：從原譯文來看, 似乎是“甲的建議得到了乙的批准”。這是不符合原意的。要知道, agree on(upon) 並不表示“某甲同意某乙的意見”或“某甲同意某事”, 而是表示“兩方或多方就某事取得一致意見或達成協議”。因此, 主詞必須指雙方或多方, 或者涉及到另一方:
- I met the new manager today and found that we agreed on basic policies. 今天我見到了新經理, 發現我們在基本政策上意見是一致的。
- Let’s try to agree on an approach to the problem. 讓我們設法就解決這個問題的方法取得一致意見。
- We agreed on the terms. 我們大家對這些條件取得了一致意見。
- You and I agree on this point. 你和我在這一點上意見是一致的。
- We agreed on a date for next meeting. 我們就下次會議的日期達成了協定。

答：agree on 是指雙方或多方“在⋯ ⋯方面取得一致意見”或“ 在⋯ ⋯ 方面達成非正式協議”, 因此主詞必須指雙方或多方, 或者涉及到另一方。例句見上條。
