already 用法 1
問：I saw her already.
查英漢詞典, 沒有查到already 與過去式連用的例句。不知這種用法正確否?
答：already 用法既可跟現在完成式連用, 也可與過去式連用。後一用法主要用於美式英語。例如:
- I’ve already answered that question.
我已經回答了那個問題。 - When I called, Tom was already dressed.
當我去他家的時候, 湯姆已經穿好了衣服。 - Dave already ate his lunch.
戴夫已吃完午飯。
already 用法 2 (already vs all ready)
問：下面兩個句子, 意思是否相同?
- The meal is already on the table.
- The meal is all ready on the table.
答：already 是副詞, 作“已經”解。句(1) 可譯為:“飯菜已經擺在桌子上了。”而在all ready 結構中ready 是形容詞, 作“準備好”解, all 是副詞, 作“完全”解(Her face was all covered with dust. 她滿臉灰塵) 。句(2) 可譯為:“ 飯菜已全部準備好, 放在桌子上了。”類似的例子:
I was all ready to leave for church. (《韋氏詞典》, 電子版)
我已經完全準備好去教堂。
already 用法 3 (already vs yet 1)
問：1. I’ve ________ answered that question.

我對於already 與yet 的用法區別總是昏昏然, 因此對於做上面的考題沒有把握。
答：already 用法大都用在肯定句中。如果用在疑問句和否定句中則具有特殊的修辭意義(見下面already vs yet 2) 。其次, already 在多數情況下佔據不確定頻率副詞(見often, always, sometimes 等) 的位置, 但是有時也可擱在句尾。
- When I called, Tom was already dressed. 我去他家的時候, 湯姆已穿戴完畢。
- I’ve already seen the report. 我已經看到報告了。
- I’ve done enough harm to her already. 我給她的傷害已夠她受的了。
yet 主要用於否定句與疑問句(用於肯定句中則另有含義), 通常位於句尾, 在否定句中還可位於主要動詞之前。在否定句中, 其詞義為:“ 迄今尚”; 在疑問句中其詞義為:“ 已經”。例如:
- I haven’t enough data yet. 我(迄今) 還沒有足夠的資料。
- Have you had your lunch yet? 你(已經) 吃午飯了嗎?
- “Has he come yet ?”“No, not yet.” “他來了嗎?”“還沒有。”
already 用法 4 (already vs yet 2)
問：(a) Have you already seen him?
(b) Have seen him yet?
從文法書上得知, already 用於肯定句, 而不能用於否定句和疑問句。但是, 在句(a)中already 卻用於疑問句, 這是怎麼回事呢?
答：說already 用於肯定句, 一般不用於否定句和疑問句是正確的。在後一情況下, 需要使用yet。例如, 下面的託福題, 就是考核這一點的。
The governor has not decided how to deal with the new problems already. (TOEFL, 83.1)
那麼, 在句(a) 中為什麼不用yet, 而用already 呢? 原來, 在疑問句中使用already 與使用yet 有語意上的區別。使用already 預計有一個肯定的回答, 也就是說, 在上句中, 說話人期望對方已經看見過他, 只是希望得到證實而已, 有時候, 使用already 則是表示說話人的驚奇(如例5) 。而使用ye t, 則是希望得到資訊, 對回答沒有任何傾向性, 因此肯定回答和否定回答都是有可能的。

(b) Have you received your invitation yet?

還應指出, already 用法還常常含有“比預料的要早”的意思, 因此, 有時候它含有驚奇的語氣:
- Is my coat dry already? That’s quick!
我的大衣已經幹了? 太快了! - It’s 5:30a.m. but he’s already worked.
現在是上午五點半, 可是他已經在工作了。 - Are you going to bed already? It’s only nine o’clock.
