available 用法
問：We regret to inform you that there are no available tickets for Friday’s performance. (《當代英語應試文法》, 中國科技大學出版社, 1995, p.215)
我看不出這道試題有什麼錯誤。請指教。
答：出題者的解釋是: 在正式英語裡, available, obtainable, suitable, 作修飾語時應放在名詞之後, 故句子中的“no available ticket” 應改為“no tickets available”。
但是, 我們認為, 出這樣有關available 用法的題目, 是不恰當的。因為像available 這樣的形容詞, 應放在名詞之前或之後, 並不是強制性的, 而是選擇性的。雖然在上面句子裡的available 放在名詞之後, 但這並不等於說把它放在名詞之前就一定是錯誤的。請考察下面其他涉及available 用法的例句:
- Every fire-engine available was rushed to the scene (or every available fire-engine).
能用上的所有的救火車都沖到火災現場。 - the best person available = the best available person.
