deserve 用法

問：You deserve succeeding.
你應當獲得成功。
有人說上面的英文句子有錯誤。但我不能理解。及物動詞deserve 不是要求V-ing 來做它的受詞嗎？

答：當用V-ing 來做deserve 的受詞時，V-ing 具有被動含義，也就是說，主詞是該動作的受動者(受事) 。例如:

1. They deserved punishing (= to be punished). 他們應當受懲罰。
2. The old woman deserves looking after.這位老大娘應當受到照顧。

當動詞具有主動意義時，也就是說，當主詞是動作的施動者(施事) 時，要用動詞不定詞來作deserve 的受詞：

1. She deserved to win because she was the best. 她應當贏, 因為她是最優秀的。
2. He deserves to get the sack. 他應當被解雇。

deserve praising/ to be praised

問：下面兩個句子哪個是正確的？
(A) The boy deserves being praised.
(B) The boy deserves praising.
這個孩子值得表揚。

答：英語裡有四個動詞，need, require, want 和deserve 要求其後的動名詞採用主動形式來表示被動意義。例如：

The boy richly deserves whipping.
這個孩子應當重重地打一頓。

因此，只有句(B) 才是正確的。

但是，當用動詞不定詞來作deserve 的受詞時，則必須用被動形式的不定詞來表示被動意義：

1. He deserves to be promoted. 他應當被提升。
2. He certainly deserves to be sent to prision. 他確實應該送去坐牢。
