except 用法 1

問：except 除了後接名詞、代名詞、動詞不定詞之外, 能否後接副詞子句?

答：except 用法可以後接副詞 子句。例如:

He’s a good husband except when he’s in drink.
他不喝醉的時候是個好丈夫。

此外, except 還可後接介係詞片語:

1. He cannot spare any time except on Sunday. 除星期天外, 他抽不出時間。
2. We rarely went anywhere except to his office. 除他的辦公室外, 我們很少去其他地方。

從上面的句子看, 介係詞but 和介係詞except 是可以互換的。這種說法對嗎?

答：使用介係詞except 用法的限制較少。使用介係詞but 則有許多限制。介係詞but 只能用在no, none, all, nobody, anywhere, everything, everyone 以及who, what, where 之後:

1. He seldom talked of anything but painting. 除了繪畫他很少談論別的。
2. Nobody else but Robert could ever say such a thing. 除了羅伯特沒人能說這樣的話。
3. No one but myself knows what really happened. 只有我知道實際上發生了什麼事。
4. Everyone but me was tired. 除了我, 大家都累了。
5. All but he had fled. 除了他之外, 大家都逃了。
6. None but the brave deserves the fair. 只有勇敢者才配得上美人。

except 用法 3 (except / except for 1)

問：錢歌川先生編著的《英文疑難詳解》詳細分析了except 與except for 用法上的區別, 他說:

“前後有相稱的同類語時就用except, 否則用except for, 例如:

We come to school every day except Sunday. (我們除星期天外天天到校上課。) 句中every day 與Sunday 為相稱的同類語。

They all went there except me. (他們都到那裡去了, 只有我沒有去) 。句中they 與me 為相稱的同類語。

I looked everywhere except in the bathroom. (除浴室外我什麼地方都看過了。) 句中everywhere 與in the bathroom 為相稱的同類語。

The dress is ready except for the buttons. (衣服全做好了, 只差鈕扣未縫。) 句中ready 與the buttons 不相稱, 非同類語。

The purse was empty except for some coppers.(錢包是空的, 只有幾個銅板。)句中empty 與coppers 不相稱, 非同類語。

Your composition is very good except for a few spelling mistakes. (你的作文除有幾個字拼錯外, 其餘都很好。) 句中very good 與a few spelling mistakes 不相稱, 非同類語”。

我花了很大力氣才弄懂了上面所說的except 與except for 的區別。但是, 過了不久, 我在A Reference Grammar for Students of English 中便讀到這樣一個句子:

Except for George, you can all go.
除了喬治外, 你們大家都可以走了。

難道George 和you all 不是相稱的同類詞語嗎? 為什麼這裡用except for 呢? 這個反例是否全部推翻了錢先生前面的論述?

答：首先應當指出, 錢歌川先生的論述是符合傳統文法學家們的觀點的。例如, F.T.Wood 對於except 與except for 也作過類似的區分:“except 是從一組東西⋯ ⋯ 中排除其特殊的一個或幾個; except for 則是以保留的方式對整個句子內容進行修正, 也就是說, 如果兩部分所用的詞或片語所表示的並非同一類事, 而它們之間又是所屬關係, 句子後半部對前半部所說的基本情況在細節上加以修正, 就要用except for 。”

錢歌川先生和F.T.Wood 的論述基本上符合英語的實際使用情況。但是, 語言是發展的, 目前人們在使用except 與except for 時, 表現出了極大的靈活性。現代語言家們對於這種靈活性也採取了寬容的態度。例如, R.A.Close 和LDCE 的編者們認為except與except for 在許多情況下已不存在上面的區分:

1. You can all go except(for) George. 除了喬治, 你們大家都可以走了。
2. He answered all the questions except (for) the last one. 除了最後一個問題之外, 他回答了所有的問題。
3. Except for me, everyone was tired. 除我之外, 大家都疲倦了。
4. Except for this, everything is in order. 除了這件事, 一切都正常。
5. Except for us, the whole village was asleep. 除了我們之外, 全村的人都入睡了。

[附注] 錢歌川先生在上面的解釋中說:“ready 與bottons 不相稱, 非同類語⋯ ⋯empty 與coppers 不相稱, 非同類語⋯⋯ very good 與a few spelling mistakes 不相稱, 非同類語”。這種解釋是一種誤解。其實, 在上面的句子裡, 按照傳統文法學家的觀點, 應當解釋為: the dress 與buttons 不是表示同一類的事物(不是並列概念) ⋯ ⋯ the purse 與coppers 不是表示同一類的事物⋯⋯

(《高中標準化測試》, 第1 冊, p.79) 標準答案為C(except) 。我認為D(except for)也是對的。但我的教師說, 根據New Concept English 的編者L.G. Alexander 的說法, 當except 用於句首時才可以用except for 來代替。

答：根據我們手頭的資料, 意義和用法與except 用法相同的except for 放在句首的情況比較常見, 但放在句末的情況也不是絕無僅有。例如:

1. None of us had any money, except (for) James. 除了詹姆斯之外, 我們誰也沒有錢。
2. Not a woman is in sight, except for Miss Penrose. 除了彭羅斯小姐之外, 一個女人也看不到。
3. Everyone has helped except for you. 除了你之外, 所有的人都幫了忙。

但是, 應當指出, 在介係詞片語之前只能使用except, 而不能使用except for :

書上給的答案為D(Except for) 。但是, 我認為選A(Except) 也是同樣正確的。不知您的意見如何?

答：New Concept English 的編者L.G. Alexander 明確指出, 當except 位於句首時要使用except for 。他在LEG 中進一步指出:“… we cannot use but and except as preposition without for to begin a sentence.”(“ 我們不能使用不帶for 的介係詞but 或except 來開始一個句子。”) 因此, 上面的試題不能選A。
[附注] 上道題選B, 也是正確的。但意思不同, 見besides/ except for 2 。

在句(1) 中except 後接動詞原形, 而在第二句中except 後接帶to 的不定詞。這是為什麼呢?

答：如果介係詞except 之前含有動詞do (包括do 的各種文法形式), 則except 後可以接動詞原形; 如果介係詞except 之前是其他動詞, 則except 後應接帶to 的動詞不定詞(to- v) :

1. He doesn’t want to do anything except help me. 除了幫助我, 任何事情他都不想做。
2. She can do everything except cook. 除了烹調之外, 她什麼事都能幹。
3. There was little I could do except wait. 除了等待, 我幾乎什麼事也不能做。

except 用法 8 (except for)

問：except for 既作“ 除了”解, 又作“ 要不是”解。如何區分這兩種含義?

答：except for 作“除了”解時, 句子的動詞一般用陳述語氣, 而作“ 要不是”解時, 句子的動詞常常用假設語氣。請比較下列句子:

1. Except for John, the whole class passed the test. 除了約翰外, 全班都通過了考試。
2. He answered all the questions except for the last one. 除最後一題外, 他回答了所有的問題。
3. Except for you, I should be dead by now. 若不是你, 我現在早死了。
4. She would leave her husband except for the children. 要不是為了孩子, 她就離開她丈夫了。
5. Except for John, they would all have died. 要不是因為約翰, 他們都已經死了。

《中高級英語考試指南》的編者認為選D(But for) 是對的, 而《英語世界》答問欄的問者和答者則認為選B(Except for) 是對的。我感到無所適從。請釋疑。

答：目前中國、香港、臺灣學英語的學生都有個誤解: except for 總是作“ 除⋯ ⋯ 之外”解, 因而與動詞的陳述語氣連用, 而but for 總是作“要不是”解, 因而與動詞的假設語氣連用。其實, except for 與but for 都可作“ 除⋯⋯ 之外”解, 與動詞的陳述語氣連用, 也都可作“要不是”解, 與動詞的假設語氣連用。在上面的試題裡, apart f rom 作“除⋯⋯ 之外”解, 與動詞的陳述語氣連用, 因此, 既可以選B, 也可以選D(But for), 只是在這種情況下except for 比but for 用得更普遍一些而已。關於but for 的這一用法, 讓我們舉一些證明例句:

1. But for John they all died. 除約翰之外, 他們大家都死了。
2. But for a half or so for lunch I am here all day. 除了吃午飯的半個小時左右, 我整天都在這裡。
3. For a year the dam remained complete but for the generators. 除了發電機, 水壩在一年的時間裡仍完好無損。

except 用法 10 (except for / but for 2)

問：《大學英語》1995 年第5 期《釋疑解難》欄有這麼一段話(p.95) :

“except for 作‘ 要不是由於(因為) ⋯⋯’解; but for 作‘ 要不是⋯⋯’、‘倘沒有’解時, 前者句子述語多用直陳語氣, 而後者則多用假設語氣⋯⋯”

答者說當except for 作“要不是⋯⋯”解時多用直陳語氣, 似乎不符合英語的實際情況。

答：同意你的說法。except for 在作“要不是⋯⋯”解時, 除了指出真實的條件外, 還常常用於提出一個非真實的條件, 此時, 句子的動詞, 照例要使用假設語氣。答者的提法給人一種印象, 似乎作“要不是”解的except for 只能表示真實條件。而不能表示非真實條件。《英語慣用法大詞典》(p.714) 也持有與此相同的觀點。這是不符合實際的。請考察下面的例句:

1. Except for you, I should be dead by now. 要不是你, 我現在早死了。
2. Except for John, they would all have died. 要不是因為約翰, 他們都已經死了。

問：I’d lend you my car except(that) I may need it later this afternoon. 這裡的except(that) 是什麼意思? 我在《遠東英漢大辭典》和ALD 中都沒有查到它的含義。

答：這裡的except (that) 是連接詞, 相當於連接詞only, 可譯為“要不是”、“只不過”、“但是”。
上面的句子可譯為:

我本來是想把我的汽車借給你的, 只是我今天下午晚些時候可能要用它。

類似的例子:

問：張道真編《現代英語用法詞典》(p.4735) 說, that 子句可以用在個別介係詞之後, 並列舉了下面的例句:

She had no idea where Cork Street was, except that it was near Bond Street.
In the United Stated, a very special situation exists in that the Negro people have reached the stage of actually becoming a nation.

請問except that 和in that 是介係詞+ that 子句結構嗎?

答：現代語言學家們認為, except that, in that, save that, but that 是複合的從屬連接詞(complex subordinators), 而不是介係詞+ that 子句結構, 見but that。R. Quirk 等人曾明確指出, 不與that 子句連用, 乃是介係詞的標準之一。

1. This suit fits me well except that the trousers are too long. 這套衣服很適合我, 只是褲子太長。
2. He is a good student except that he is occasionally careless. 他是個好學生, 只是偶爾有些粗心。
3. He has no special fault except he smokes too much. 除吸煙太重之外, 他沒有什麼嚴重的缺點。
4. His account is correct, except that some details are omitted. 除了一些細節未提到之外, 他的敘述是正確的。
5. “How was the concert?” “fine, except that we arrived terribly late.” “音樂會怎麼樣?”“很好, 只是我們到得太晚了。”

課文注釋說, except 是介係詞, 是這樣嗎?

答：應當注意, except that 與except 並不是相同的語言單位。except that 應解釋為複合連接詞, 見except that1 。

except 用法 17 (except that / except(that))

標準答案規定選D(except that) 。但是我認為也可以選B(except) 。

答：選B(except) 也是同樣正確的。因為複合從屬連接詞except that 中的that 常常可以省略, 請見except(that), except that1 中的例句。

except 用法 18 (excepting)

問：《英語學習小百科詞典》(p.81) 說:

“excepting不能跟except 換用。excepting 僅用於否定形式: not excepting(包括) 。”

錢歌川先生在《英文疑難詳解》一書中說:“至於excepting 一字, 則只用於句首, 或用於not, without, always 字樣之後⋯⋯”(p.270)
但是, 我在A comprehensive Grammar of the English Language 中卻讀到過這樣一個句子:

All except(ing) the captain were rescued.(CGEL, §9.58)
除了船長之外, 大家都被救了出來。

這個句子似乎完全推翻了上面兩本書的說法。請指正。
