farther/ further
問：farther 與further在詞義和用法上有什麼區別？
答：farther 與further都是形容詞和副詞far 的比較級：
far —farther — farthest
far —further — furthest
但是它們在詞義和用法上卻有不小的區別。farther 一般只用於表示有形距離的“較遠”、“更遠”：
- On the farther side of the street there was a large shop. 街那頭有一家大商店。
- We can’t go any father without a rest. 不歇一會兒, 我們一步也走不動了。
further 既可表示有形距離的“較遠”、“更遠”(A)，還可表示“更多的”、“另一些”、“進一步的”、“而且”、“此外”等等(B)：
A. 1. There is a cottage on the further side of the hill. 在小山的那一邊有一個茅舍。
2. It turned out a further distance than he had imagined. 後來發現距離比他想像的要遠。
3. It’s not safe to go any further. 再往前走，就不安全了。
B. 1. Have you any further questions to ask? 你們還有問題要問嗎？
2. We intend to stay for a further two months. 我們打算再停留兩個月。
3. The school will be closed until further notice. 學校將關閉, 開學時間另行通知。
