答：once 子句中的have understood 並不是現在完成式, 而是未來完成式。
英語動詞的未來完成式表示在未來的某一時間點之前業已完成的動作。動詞的未來完成式由shall / will + have + V-ed 構成。例如:
- I hope we’ll have got the instructions ready before you come tomorrow. 我希望明天你來之前我們已把說明書準備好了。
- By the end of this month, we shall have carried out our production plan. 到本月底我們將完成生產計畫。
但是, 在時間或條件副詞子句中, 當需要表達未來完成式的意義時, 則須用現在完成式來代替未來完成式, 即用have + V-ed 結構來代替shall / will + have + V-ed 結構。
例如:
- I will repair your bicycle when I have finished this job. 我做完這項工作之後就修理你的自行車。
- 2. By the time the pressure has fallen to atmospheric pressure, the temperature will drop also to the steam temperature at that pressure. 當壓強降到大氣壓強時, 溫度也將降到常壓下的蒸氣溫度。

現在我們再回過頭來研究一下你所提問的句子, 便可以很容易地看出, 子句中的have understood 儘管在形式上是個現在完成式, 但實際上卻是個未來完成式(從屬連接詞once 和主要句子的動詞shall apply 明顯地表達出來了這一點) 。原譯文的譯者顯然是誤解了這一點, 因而把have understood 譯成了“已經學會”。“已經學會”, 表示作者寫這句話時已經學會, 而這是與原文未來完成式意義相違背的(在作者寫這句話時, 作為該書讀者的學生尚未學到牛頓定律), 試比較:“他已經走了”。
