help 用法1：
問：(1) “Do you travel much?”
“Not more than I can help by sea.” (《靈格風英語教程》，p.79)
(2) Don’t tell him more than you can help.
這裡can和help 用法很不好理解。
答：can’t (couldn’t) help 用法想必你已經很熟悉了(参見 can’t help)。這裡的 can help 用法就等於can’t help（不能避免，沒有辦法避免）。這樣說，一定令你很驚訝，但這是事實！ as little as you can help 用法的意思恰好是 as little as you can’t help這種用肯定形式表示否定内容的help 用法，雖然會遭到過某些文法學家的指責（他們認為這種用法是不合邏輯的），但現已固定下來，並被廣泛使用。下面是一些實例及其中譯：
- I shouldn’t stay longer than I can help. 我將儘量少待一段時間。
- He never does more work than he can help. 他從不多做工作。
- Don’t spend more money than you can help. 能不花的錢，就不要花。
- I shall not work any harder than I can help. 我不會過分辛苦地工作。
- She made as little noise as she could help, but she still woke up the baby. 她儘量不出響聲，但還是把嬰兒兒吵醒了。
不難看出，上面各句中的can (could) help = can’t (couldn’t) help more than you can help = more than you have to = more than is necessary。
Help 用法2（help sb do sth /help sb to do sth.）：
問：有的英語字典上說：“動詞help的人稱主詞和它的人稱受詞一起操作的，那個不定詞動詞前可以省略to；如果不是，就仍保留to。
Please help me find a seat. 請幫我找個座位（是你我一起去找）。
Please help me to find a seat. 請幫我找個座位（是你去找，不是你我一起去找）”。

請問情況真是如此嗎？
答：這種有關help 用法的說法不完全符合英的實際情況。在英語裡實際上並不存在這樣的區分。
- I can’t make you happy myself; but I can help another man to do it. 我本人是不會使你幸福的；但是我可以協助另一個男人做到這一點。
- The term “technology” refers to the discoveries and inventions that help people improve their way of life. “技術”這個術語是指有助於人們改善生活方式的發現和發明。
很顯然，在句(1)裡，絕不是動詞help的主詞來完成 to do it這個動作，而是 another man來完成 to do it這個動作。而在句(2)裡，絕不是 the discoveries and inventions和 people一起去改善生活方式。
我麽認為，A Comprehensive Grammar of the English Language的作者們的即使是符合英語的實際情況的：
“在help所使用的兩種結構中，帶to的結構在英式英語中更常見，而不帶to的結構在美式英語中更常見”。
另外，A. S. Hornby的建議對於我們也是很有幫助的：
“對於學習英語的外國學生來說，在拿不準help之後是否用to時，用to總是不會錯。”
請參考下面的實例：
- A short while ago, my sister helped me to carry one of my old bookcases up the stairs. 剛才我姐姐幫我把一個舊書櫥抬到樓上來了。
- I’ll help you solve it. 我將幫助你解決這個問題。
- He helped the family conceal the disgrace. 他幫助家庭隱瞞了這個恥辱。
- A zebra’s stripes help this animal hide from its enemies. 斑馬的條有助於它們躲避敵人。
Help 用法3 （cannot help(but)/couldn’t help(but)）：
問：《英語考試題典》(本科生、研究生專用)(吉林科技出版社，p.131)有一道判錯題：
Charlie assured his wife that there was no danger, but she could not help but worry.
該書編者判 上句“but worry”為錯誤。但我認為這並沒有錯。
答：可能編者把 cannot(couldn’t) help but和 cannot(couldn’t) help 用法兩個結構弄混了。cannot(couldn’t) help but之後應跟原形動詞：
- When a friend gave Jim a ticket to the game, he couldn’t help but go. 當一位朋友給了吉姆一張比賽門票時，他是不能不去的。
- You can’t(help) but admire him. 你禁不住會敬佩他。
而在 cannot(couldn’t) help之後則應跟動名詞。請比較這兩種不同的用法：
- She couldn’t help smiling. 她禁不住笑了。
- “I don’t think Professor Jones meant to be funny this morning, do you?” “No, although I couldn’t help but laugh at some of his remarks.”
