look 用法 1 (look/looks)

問：You can’t judge a person by his look. (人不可貌相, 不能按外貌來判斷一個人。) 有人告訴我句中的by his look 的用法有毛病, 但我經常看到by the look 的用法。

答：名詞look 用法作“看”、“表情”解時, 是個可數名詞, 有單複數形式:

1. She gave me s strange look.
   她奇怪地看了我一眼。
2. There were angry looks from the neighbours.
   鄰居們顯出生氣的樣子。

當表示“外貌”、“容貌”或“美貌”時, 則應當用複數形式looks:

1. His looks are really quite remarkable.
   他的外貌確實很出眾。
2. She’s beginning to lose her looks.
   她的姿色已經一天不如一天了。

因此, 你的引文應改為: You can’t judge a person by his looks.

look 用法 2 (It looks as if(as though))

問：It looks as though the boat would leave on schedule,, despite the danger of ice in the channel.
答案為應將上句的looks 改為seems 。難道it looks as though 不是正確的格式嗎?

答：it looks as if(as though) 也是英語的正確用法, 只是沒有it seems as if (as though)那麼正式。請看下面的實例:

1. It looks as if it’s going to rain.
   天好像要下雨了。
2. It looks as if we’re going to miss the plane.
   看來我們怕是趕不上飛機了。
3. It looks as if they are all in a terrible hurry.
   他們好像都急得不得了。
4. It looks as though we shall have to do the work ourselves.
   看來這項工作我們不得不自己動手了。

請問這兩個句子的意思是否一樣?

答：這兩個句子的意思不一樣。句(A) 的意思是: 這個姑娘看起來很動人(可愛) 。在這裡good 是指外表(attractive, enticing 等) 。而句(B) 的意思是: 這個姑娘看起來很健康(或面色很好) 。在這裡well 是指健康(healthy in appearance) 。
look 如同seem 一樣, 是連綴動詞, 要求形容詞做述語(主詞補語) 。因此well 在這裡是形容詞。

1. There’s a Russian restaurant along the street. I looks good.
   沿著這條街有一家俄國飯館。看樣子挺好的。
2. My boy is not looking well. Has he been overworking?
   我兒子的臉色不好。他是不是操勞過度?

look 用法 8 (look into/look through)

標準答案是A。但不知是否也可選C(look into) 。

答：選A 和選C 是同樣正確的。因為look into 除作“調查”、“瞭解”解之外, 也可作瀏覽(書、雜誌、報紙) 解:

1. He looks through several newspapers before breakfast.
   他通常在早飯前流覽幾份報紙。
2. I usually look into a book before deciding whether to read it.
   在決定是否要閱讀一本書之前我通常是先流覽一下。
3. They are looking into some magazines.
   他們正在流覽一些雜誌。(《英語片語動詞詞典》)
