有關no more than 的真正含義和用法，不是解「不超過」

No more than1：

問：下面的譯文是否譯出了no more than 的真實含義？
(1) no more than twenty. [原譯] 十幾個(《現代漢英辭典》，p.1198，外研社)(2) There were no more than three books on the table. [原譯] 最多有三本書在桌子上。(《遠東英漢大辭典》，p.1404)

答：首先要明確，no more than + 數詞，並不是表示不確定的數目，而是表示準確的數目。no more than twenty 的意思並不是“不少於20”或“十幾個”，而是恰好“等於20”。
no more than 的功用僅僅在於表達說話人言其少的口氣。相當於only, a mere, 一般可譯為“僅僅”、“才”、“ 只不過”等等。如：

1. The remotest of the planets will be perhaps no more than a week’s travel from the earth. 從地球到最遠的行星，也許僅僅是一周的飛行距離。
2. No more than 3 people came to my class, unfortunately. 很遺憾，只有3 個人來上我的課。

因此，句(2) 應譯為“桌子上只有3 本書”。譯為“最多3 本”，意味著也有可能是“ 一本”或“兩本”，仍然是個概略數目，而且未能把作者言其少的口氣和主觀態度表達出來。

中國人之所以常常誤譯這個結構，是因為它在形式上完全對應於中文的“不多於”。另一原因，則是混淆了no more than 與not more than 的區別。後者沒有什麼特殊的口氣，只是客觀地表達“不多於”、“不超過”的意思。從這個結構看不出說話人言其多或言其少的口來。如：

The water is not more than five feet deep at any point.
這裡的水任何一處都不超過5 英尺深。

請判定下面的譯文是否正確：

No more than five people applied for the job.
[原譯] 申請這份工作的竟然未超過5 人。(《朗文當代高級英語詞典(英英-英漢雙解)》，商務印書館，1998，p.981)

No more than 2：

問：(1) His answer was to lift the vessel out of the water by making it ride on a cushion of air, no more than one or two feet thick. (New Concept English, Book 4, p.117) [原譯] 他的答案就是使船隻浮在一個不超過一、二英尺厚的氣墊上行駛，把它托出水面。(中譯本)
(2) Each of these may be no more than a small fraction of an inch in size. [原譯] 每一個電路的大小可能不超過一英寸的十分之幾。(中譯本)
no more than 可以譯為“不超過”嗎？

答：上列譯文的譯者們忽略了not more than + 數詞(或名詞) 與no more than + 數詞(或名詞) 這兩個片語在意義上、口氣上的區別。not more than 沒有什麼特殊的意味，只是客觀地表示“不超過”、“不大於”。從這裡看不出作者對數量多少或事物大小的主觀態度或口氣。no more than 則不同，它主要是用來表達作者的主觀看法或口氣的：強調數量之少，事物之小或微不足道。一般可譯作“僅僅”、“只不過”、“ 才”、“ 跟⋯⋯ 一樣少(小) ”。例如：

1. This first orbit nearest to the nucleus contains no more than 2 electrons. (言其少) 最靠近原子核的軌道僅僅含有兩個電子。
2. Poison enables the snake to get its food with very little effort, no more effort than one bit.(強調用力之小) 毒液能使毒蛇毫不費力地獲取食物，只要咬一口就行了。
3. In this case, the drops do not get very big, and the earth receives no more than a drizzle.(強調雨之小) 在這種情況下, 雨滴不會變大，因而落到地上的僅僅是毛毛細雨。

這裡應當補充說明的是，nothing more than 具有與no more than 相同的語氣， 亦可譯為“僅僅”、“只不過”等。例如：

1. “Actually”, says one of our great computer-scientists, “computers are nothing more than unintelligent animals. They haven’t the brains of a bird. And they can’t do the jobs that must be done.” 有一位元著名的電腦專家說：“實際上，電腦只是一種沒有智力的動物。電腦還不如鳥聰明，也做不了非做不可的工作。”
2. After the two have thrust upward more than a hundred miles, the V-2 has exhausted its supply of fuel, Now it is nothing more than dead weight. 當它們倆上升到一百多英里的高空以後，V-2 火箭就燒完了它全部的燃料。此時，V-2 火箭只不過是無效重物而已。

No more than 3:

no more…than 的譯法覺得不妥，請釋析。

答：從翻譯的角度看，這類句型有一個很重要的特點，就是than 後面的子句在形式上是肯定的，在意義上則是否定的；表面上表示不同等的比較，實質上則是表示等同關係。如：

1. He’s no more your friend than I’m your mother. 他不是你的朋友, 就像我不是你的母親一樣。
2. A fool can no more see his own folly than he can see his ears. 蠢人不能自知其蠢, 就像不能自見其耳一樣。
3. We have no more right to consume happiness without proceeding it than to consume wealth without producing it. 我們如不創造幸福，就無權享受幸福，正如不創造財富就無權享受財富一樣。
4. You’re no more the queen than I am Julius Caesar. 你不是女王，就像我不是凱撒一樣。

從上面的例子很容易看出，no more…than 常常用來表示類比，即用人們熟悉或已知的事物去比喻不熟悉或未知的事物。因此，上例似應譯為：

也許他的生命一朝結束之後， 他的一生將不會在世界上留下什麼痕跡，就像投入水中的石子不會在水面上留下什麼痕跡一樣。

《現代英語用法詞典》(三) (外研社，p.888) 將這類句子裡的no more… than 譯為“比⋯⋯更不”, 不僅沒有觸及問題的實質，而且碰上有的句子往往無從譯起，如：

He’s no more fit to be a minister than a school boy would be.

No more than 4(no more(…)than):

問：The officials could see no more than the Emperor. 那些官員和皇帝一樣什麼也沒看見。
我搞不清英文原文的結構。請分析。

答：見no more than3, 5 。

No more than 5(no more(…)than):

問：(1) He’s no more your friend than I’m your mother.
(2) I have no more friends than you have.
根據英語著作對no more…than 的解釋，句(1) 應當釋為：“他不是你的朋友，就像我不是你的母親一樣。”請問：句(2) 是否可以譯為：“我沒有朋友，就像你沒有朋友一樣。”?

答：在像句(1) 那類句子裡，more 是副詞。從表面上看，這種句型表示不同等的比較，實質上卻是表示等同關係(用人們熟悉的事物去比喻不熟悉的事物) ；另外，than 後面的子句在形式上是肯定的，但在意義上卻是否定的。例如：

1. A fool can no more see his own folly than he can see his ears. 蠢人不能自知其蠢，就像不能自見其耳一樣。
2. He’s no more fit to be a minister than a school boy would be. 他不適於當部長, 就像一個小學生不適於當部長一樣。
3. Rachel is no more courageous than Saul (is). 瑞吉兒不勇敢, 就像索爾不勇敢一樣。
4. I can no more apologize than I could kneel to them. 我不能向他們道歉，就像我不能對他們下跪一樣。
5. She’s no more enthusiastic than the others. 她不熱情, 就像其他人不熱情一樣。
6. And most patent medicines were no more reliable than the itinerant merchants who sold them. 大多數專利藥品不可靠，就像賣這些藥品的流動商人那樣不可靠。
7. Even when doctors were available, they were often no more knowledgeable than their patients. 即使有了醫生，他們也常常像他們的病人那樣缺少知識。

但是，當more 用作限定詞(如more books) 或名詞片語的中心詞(如more of the books) 時，no more…than 的含義為：“ 和⋯⋯ 一樣少”、“僅僅跟⋯ ⋯一樣多”：

1. I have no more money than you have. 我的錢跟你的一樣少。
2. Ted got no more of the votes than he needed. 特德僅僅獲得了他所需要的選票。

但這並不是說，當more 作限定詞或名詞片語的中心詞時，no more…than 總是具有這裡所說的第二種含義(如例(2)) 。應當注意，當more 修飾可分等級的名詞時，no more…than 就會具有本條所說的第一種含義(如例(1)) ：

1. She is no more a fool than you are. 她不是傻瓜, 就如同你不是傻瓜一樣。
2. They are no more scholars than my baby (is). 他們不是學者, 就如同我的嬰兒不是學者一樣。
