reach 用法 1 (reach home)
問：下面是《英語考試嚮導》1999 年第7 期第28 頁上有關reach 用法的試題及解答:
“…it would be pretty late when I ________ home.

選A。B 錯在home 前要加the 或my”。
我認為reach home 並沒有錯, 根本不需要在home 前加the 或my 。您說呢?
答：同意你的說法。reach home 是完全正確的用法, 即reach 用法可以用作不及物動詞, 後面跟副詞:
- When she reached home, her mother asked: …
當她到家的時候, 母親問她: ⋯ ⋯ - Mother will be glad to see us when reach home.
我們回到家裡, 媽媽看到我們會很高興的。 - I reached here Thursday morning about 2 o’clock.
我星期四清晨兩點左右到達了那裡。
reach vs reach to
問：The letter which I mailed to my sister a month before Christmas has not yet reached to her.
答案為把reached to her 改為reached her) 。但是reach to 同樣也作“到達”解, 為什麼不能用reach to 呢? 請看下面的例句:
He’ll fit an extension so that the flex can reach(to) the socket.
他將安裝一個線板, 以使電線能夠接到插座上。
上例說明, reach 與reach to 是可以互換的。
答：reach 用法與reach to 主要有兩個區別。
A. reach to 一般只與表示處所的名詞(代名詞) 連用, 而作“到達”解的reach 則沒有這個限制。例如:
- We had twenty miles to walk to reach the nearest railway station.
我們得走20 英里才能到達最近的火車站。 - Your letter never reached me.
你的信從未到達我手。 - Not a sound reached our ears.
沒有一點兒聲音傳到我們耳朵裡來。
B. reach to 著重過程, 而reach + 直接受詞則強調完成意義, 表示目標已達到。請看下面的實例:
- The rope won’t reach to the ground so you’ll have to jump the last few feet.
繩子伸不到地面, 因此到最後幾英尺你得跳下去。 - Your voice won’t reach to the back of the auditorium; we’ll have to use an amplifier.
禮堂後排聽不到你的聲音, 還是要用一下擴音器。 - I like curtains that reach to the floor.
我喜歡一直拖到地板上的窗簾。 - He wore a coat the reached to his knees.
他穿著一件長到膝蓋的大衣。
