spend 用法 (spend on / in)

問：動詞spend 用法到底是與介係詞on 連用, 還是與介係詞in 連用呢?

答：作“花費(金錢)”解的spend 用法可與on, in 或for 連用, 表示“把(金錢) 花在⋯⋯ 上”, 作“ 花(時間) ”解的spend 可與on 或in 連用, 表示“把(時間) 花在⋯⋯上”。例如:

1. He spent all his money on new books.
   他把所有的錢都花在買新書上了。
2. How much did you spend for that book?
   買那本書你花了多少錢?
3. Every spare minute he gets in spent on the car.
   他把每一點閒置時間都花在汽車上了。
4. He spends a lot of money on (in) entertaining friends.
   他把許多錢花在款待朋友上。
5. He has spent a small fortune on improving his property.
   他花了一筆不多的錢來增加他的不動產。

當表示“花時間(金錢) 做某事”時, 常常省略介係詞, 尤其是在口語中:

1. I’d rather spend money traveling than buying a house.
   我寧願花錢旅遊, 也不願買房子。
2. She woke early, meaning to spend all day writing.
   她醒得很早, 打算用整天時間來寫作。
3. He spent much time correcting my grammar.
   他花了許多時間來矯正我的文法。

《高中英語疑難排解300 例》(學苑出版社, 1996 年, p.166) 說spend on 與spend in 的 區別在於前者後接something, 後者後接doing some thing 。我們從例(4) 和例(5) 可以看出, 該書的說法是不正確的。

spend 用法 (spend…to do / (in) doing)

問：Prof. Zog, why are we spending billions and billons to land a flying saucer on Earth when there is no life there? (翟象俊主編《大學英語》精讀第二冊, Unit One)

我認為上句有誤。應將to land 改為(in) landing。

答：上面的句子是正確的。spend…to do 的用法在美式英語中日漸增多。我們在考試中切不要把它判為錯誤。請看下面的實例:

1. The government spent a lot of money to help make this land better.
   政府花了大量資金幫助改良這片土地。
2. You don’t have to spend a lot to be fashionable.
   你不必花很多錢來趕時髦。
