wonder 用法：兩個意義，不同用法

wonder 用法1：

問：I wondered if you could help us? 主要子句和從屬子句中的動詞均使用過去式，這是指過去時間嗎？

答：wonder 用法在這裏不是指過去時間，而是指現在時間。這種用法叫做禮貌過去式，因主要子句用了禮貌過去式，後面子句中的動詞為了遵從事態呼應原則也跟著前移為過去式了。雖然這種用法的一般過去式都可以用一般現在式來代替，但是，代替後講話者的口氣和禮貌的態度，便蕩然無存了。請比較：

“Do you want to buy this one?” vs “Did you want to buy this want?”

下面是一些類似的例子：

1. We were hoping you would stay with us. 我們誠盼您能何我們待在一起。
2. Could I borrow your car? 我能借用一下您的汽車嗎？
3. I wondered if you were free this evening. 不知您今天晚上是不是有空。
4. We were wondering whether we might beg a lift in your car? 我們不知道是否能請求您讓我們搭你的車？

wonder 用法2：

問：I wonder 是陳述句，為什麽它引出受詞子句時句末用問號？

答：在一般的情況下，wonder 用法引出受詞子句提出間接疑問時，是不用問號的。如：

1. I wonder what they call these flowers. 我不知道他們怎麽稱呼這些花。
2. They’ll be wondering where I am. 他們將不知道我在哪裏。

但是，當I wonder… 結構用來代替有禮貌的詢句或委婉的請求時，則句
末可以使用問號（參見suppose we went/go用法）：

1. I wonder how you came to miss your way? 我不知道你是怎樣迷路的。
2. I wonder whether you could lend me 50 pence? 我不知道你能否借給我五十便士？
3. I wonder what her motive was in breaking the windows? 我不知道她打碎窗戶的動機是什麽。

wonder 用法3：

問：I wonder that the machine has other faults I haven’t noticed. 《朗文英語正誤詞典》(安徽科技出版社，p.451；上海譯文出版社，p.365)說上面的句子是個錯句，必須將that改為whether。並說只有wonder + whether/if 和It’s no wonder that 句型。難道wonder that不是一個標準的英語句型嗎？

答：如果想表示“我懷疑這台機器是不是有我沒有發現的其他毛病。” 這層意義，則上面的英語句子是有毛病的，必須將that改為whether 或if。但是，如果想表示“這台機器竟有我沒有發現的其他毛病，真使我感到驚訝” 這層意義，則上面的英語句子是正確的，不須作任何變動，見wonder 用法4：

wonder 用法4（wonder wh-/wonder that）：

問：I wonder (that) he wasn’t killed. 查辭典wonder主要有兩個意義：a. 想知道，不知道；b. 驚訝，驚奇。不知道上面句子裏的wonder作何解釋，因此不知下面哪句譯文是正確的：
(A) 我不知道他沒有被殺。 (B) 他沒有被殺，我真感到驚訝。

答：必須記住，wonder 用法作“想知道，不知道”解時，它是個及物動詞，後面常常跟wh- 子句、if子句或wh- + to不定詞：

1. I wonder where they have gone. 我不知道他們哪裏去了。
2. I wonder if you’d give me some advice. 我不知道你是否能給我忠告。
3. I was wondering how to do it. 我不知道如何做這件事。

wonder 用法作“驚訝、驚奇”解時，是個不及物動詞。如受詞為名詞常加介係詞at：Marx wondered at her silence （馬克思對她的沉默感到驚訝。）I wonder he wasn’t killed. = I wonder at the fact that he wasn’t killed. 但at the fact常常省略，有時連that也一起省略：

1. I wonder that you were able to do that. 你成功地做到了這一點，真使我感到驚訝。
2. I don’t wonder (that) they refused. 他們拒絕了，我並不感到驚訝。
3. I don’t wonder you were anxious about their safety. 難怪你為他們的安全擔心。
